Grandma's Apron

Don't you just love that photo? I doctor'd it up a bit w/ color, but it's just so sweet.

It reminds me of my own little Grandma years ago in her kitchen, woodburning stove/oven, a dry sink w/ pitcher & bowl & a metal washtub. The well was right outside the back door, right off the kitchen. She would ask me or my bro. to go draw water for her. It was such a wonderful memory.
One time I was outside playing w/ my brother as usual. Grandma was baking a cake from scratch. I went in the back door to get a drink and saw the HUGE old crockery bowl full of sweet batter. Started gobblin up big spoonfuls of it. By the time my bro. and I had snuck bites for a while, there was about half the amount of cake batter that she had started with...LOL. She told us that she KNEW we were going to do that and she made a double batch! I miss her. She's been gone a long time and it's kind of bittersweet to remember times like that.

Oh.. and she aways wore an apron! Always.

Here's a sweet little writing called
"Grandma's Apron"
author unknown.

The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven; it was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those old aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids; and when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling-wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls.

In the fall it was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out on the porch and waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields for dinner.

It will be a long time before anyone invents something that will replace that old-time apron that served so many purposes.

Hope you enjoyed our little walk down my memory lane. God Bless, Happy Friday, and have a terrific weekend.

Thursday, February 14, 2008

Well, it's Thursday. It's cold and windy here, but so far dry. Things for me are kind of crazy right now. We're moving next week! It's a mixed blessing... we are excited to be moving, but dread the move itself. Here's a painting I did last year. It's one of my favorites. I do have a thing about Moonshadows. The word, the actual shadows of the Moon... I just love it. Here I tried to capture a cold winter's night with the Moon casting shadows in the snow.
I need to get back to painting. I'm going to have a studio all to myself when we move, so maybe then! Watch for some new paintings in March!
Have a lovely Thursday.

Fantastic Friday!!

Hope you're having a lovely day. I am so busy, creating little Extreme Primitive Cats & Rabbits!!! They're so much fun to make. When their faces come together, their little personalities come out...LOL. That's when I name them, because I have a better idea of WHO they are.

Makes me think of a wonderful Biblical truth. WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST. If you abide in HIM and He abides in you, you are ROYALTY. You are the sons and daughters of the KING of KINGS! Thank God our personalities don't determine who we are in Jesus. The enemy knows and trembles! Jesus paid the price of our ticket to Heaven.

I'd love to share a fantastic devotional I read today. It's from the Girlfriends In God Daily Devotional.

Travel Theology
Gwen Smith

"I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken." (Psalm 16:8 NIV)

Friend to Friend
I recently heard a friend say, "I used to think that the Bible was the road map for life. Now I feel that it is more like a traveling companion for the journey." That was profound to me. While it's true that we don't always know which direction to take next, I'm so thankful that we do have a heavenly hand to hold along the way.

I am a 'regular' at the Charlotte, NC airport. Not long ago, while at my gate preparing to board a flight, I overheard an agent at the ticket counter ask a common travel question, "What is your final destination?" The inquiry tickled my mind into a reflective wonderland.

What is my final destination? Beyond the obvious boarding-pass-answer, I began to think about the significance of that question concerning my life. I'd like to invite you to pack your bags and take a journey with me over the next few minutes as we consider a few questions that could help define your own 'travel theology'. Hang on! I must caution you, this ride could get bumpy. No need for concern though, I anticipate we will soon be soaring in amazing, revolutionary skies of grace. Let's consider the following five questions as we prepare for take off:

1. May I have your ticket please?
Before you board the Heaven-Bound Express you must have a ticket, but your money doesn't have any value in this foreign land. Do you possess the free "ticket of grace?" If not, I've got good news for you! A ticket was purchased on your behalf by the Son of God Himself, Jesus Christ. He came to earth to make a way for each of us to have access to God through the forgiveness of our sins.

Jesus said in John 14:6 "I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Your ticket is free. You just need to accept it.

2. Do you have any baggage to check?
Are there any anxieties, worries, past sins, past hurts with you today should be placed in the able hands of Jesus? The Bible says in Philippians 4:6, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Psalm 55:22 says "Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous fall."

3. Can I please see your ID?
Who are you? What defines you? Who does Christ say you are? What is the 'Emotional Security Number' on your ID? These are important factors of identification. Be sure that you have the proper ID with you today.

4. Is your seat belt fastened?
Once onboard, there are a few important details that must not be overlooked. A seat belt is one of them. We use seatbelts to hold us firmly in place, securing our safety. During travel, the flight can often become bumpy. The word 'turbulent' is defined this way: tur·bu·lent (tĂ»rZbyM-lMnt) adj. 1. Violently agitated or disturbed; tumultuous: turbulent rapids. 2. Having a chaotic or restless character or tendency: a turbulent period in history. 3. Causing unrest or disturbance; unruly: turbulent, revolutionary undercurrents.

Turbulence is often unavoidable, both on a flight in the sleekest jet and in the lives we live. Do you remember that childhood book "Going On a Bear Hunt?" The chorus would chime in as each new obstacle blocked the path of the adventurers, "Can't go over it, can't go under it, can't go around it, you have to go through it." Like that exhausting childhood story, turbulence is often in our path of travel and there is simply no way around it. You have to go through it. So be sure to fasten your Seatbelt of Faith.

Psalm 16:8 "I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken."

As we prepare to land...one final question...

5. Are you traveling alone or with a companion?
Jesus said He came so that we would have abundant life -- a full, satisfying journey! We were never promised a problem-free trip. Are you traveling alone today? If so, let me encourage you to take His hand...the ride won't necessarily be easier, but it will be sweeter and your destination will be sure!!!

Let's Pray
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of grace. Would you be with me today on this journey? Would you please hold me securely through the turbulent times that are inevitable? Please increase my measure of faith. It is a blessing to know that you are by my side at all times. Thank you for being my traveling companion.
In Jesus' Name
Amen.

AMEN & AMEN!!!

Hope your "JOURNEY" today is BLESSED.

Want to Read a Wonderful Book?

"90 Minutes in Heaven"
by Don Piper & Cecil Murphy
I was taking a peek at Lea's Blog site, Farmhouse Blessings (I have a link to it right over there..) and she had a book review on it. Gave me a great idea! Thanks Lea!
This book was amazing. My Dad went home to be with the Lord several years ago. He was a strong Christian man and I often wondered what he saw when he passed, what Heaven was like, etc. After reading this book I have realized that all of earth's cares are GONE. My Dad was happy and healthy and with God!
Don Piper is a minister who suffered a terrible auto accident. He DIED. He was there! He came back and now shares what happened in this book.
I know you'll love it.

There Was An Old Lady...

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd, to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat.
Imagine that, she swallowed a cat.
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a dog.
What a hog! To swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat ...
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a cow.
I don't know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog ...
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat ...
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird ...
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider...
That wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly.
I don't know why she swallowed that fly—
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old lady who swallowed a horse—
she died, of course.

My Grandmother

Hi everyone! What a wonderful Tuesday, although it has rained all day. It was 70 degrees here yesterday late afternoon. By this morning it was in the 30s and now it's sleeting! Ridiculous weather, but still. I can appreciate the rain. The Lord God knows when to send it.

I wanted to share a bit about my family. I am the great grandaughter of German Immigrants. My Maternal Grandmother was born in 1890 in Lawrence, Kansas. That is a photo of her taken around 1910, when she was maybe 20 yrs old. She was one of the first licensed women drivers in Kansas City! Can you believe that car? We are so blessed to live in the time we do. With all it's stresses and problems, it's still better than having to wash clothes on a washboard with lye soap, or NO INDOOR PLUMBING. That would be a nightmare.

My banner at the top of the blog is also a photo of my Grandmother. She was younger there. It's hard to imagine her ever being that young. I think she was lovely.

MORE SNOW!

Yes.... we are going to experience the most unusual weather I've ever seen, FOR THE 2nd TIME IN LESS THAN A WEEK!

Last Thursday we woke up to temps in the upper 60's. By 11am the temp was in the 20s!!! We had rain, sleet, ice, & snow. Now we are supposed to have the same thing. Today it's in the upper 60s, and by tomorrow we'll have LOTS of SNOW! Oh well, I guess it IS FEBRUARY, right?

No complaints really... just comments. The weather just seems to be getting weirder and weirder.

A sweet friend of mine sent me a photo of her darling baby girl holding a dollie that I made and she bought from me. The photo is over there, to the side. Isn't it PRECIOUS? I have that photo on my desktop right now. It just makes me smile every time I look at it. Hope you enjoy it. Thank you again my Sweet Friend!

Okay, going to go post the photo now. Blessings from God to you! Penny
